Unfortunately, it is unknown that 300,000 children are living in slavery in Haiti. This means that 1 in every 15 children lives in restavek-a modern day form of child slavery. Haiti is considered the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and daily their families, especially their children, are suffering hardships as a result of this devastation. Many people know that Haiti is an impoverished nation. Churches and foundations routinely host missions and trips to benefit Haiti, in which they build homes and help restore some devastated areas.
Here in Phoenix, many of our amenities are taken for granted. We have freedom, ability, and access to hundreds of schools to send our children to based on Arizona state law. From public to private, Christian and Catholic, Montessori or homeschooling, we can send our child to any public school in the state. In Haiti, not only do they lack the means to get their children theyre, they lack the funding and education system altogether.
The cylce that these poor children are entering will continue thoruhg adulthood. Although it may seem harmless right now, the future effects are more devastating. An uneducated, illiterate child becomes an uneducated. illiterate adult, and collectively they become an illiterate nation. Hip-hop artist Common has visited the nation and CNN filmed the documentary (see the video). This powerful story about the transformation of one child’s life is enough to bring tears to the eyes and cause others to help improve the life of more children.
Although it may seem that we are thousands of miles away from Haiti and are unable to provide any assistance for the thousands of enslaved, uneducated children in that nation, we are only a click away from helping free one child at a time. We shop online continuously, purchasing clothes, shoes, books, etc. We should take one minute to donate to the Restavek Freedom Foundation, a foundation that advocates for the freedom of Haitian children so that can receive an eudcation.
Each child that is helped reduces the illiteracy rate worldwide. A mind is a terrible thing to waste and a terrible thing to destroy. Please add one more resolution to your list and help a child (or two) this year get the education. Give them back their hope for a better future.
Never deprive someone of hope — it may be all they have.
