The season to celebrate is almost upon us; which means new Indie Movies will be in wide release to Art House Theaters or Cinemaplexes everywhere in Pittsburgh. Here is the upcoming schedule for some good choices to see locally while ringing in the Holidays.
“The Descendants“- Set in Waikiki, Hawaii; a disillusioned Dad (George Clooney) must take care of his two teen daughters after his wife is gravely injured in a boating accident. Leaving him to try and make sense of the secret he discovers after her death– that she was cheating on him. Droll Comedy by Oscar nominated Director Alexander Payne, whose last movie “Sideways” was released to such acclaim in 2004.
“Weekend“- A fan favorite at both this year’s SXSW & Outfest comes a star-crossed tale of two men, polar opposites of each other, who fall in love over a long weekend and both contemplate turning it into something more. Frank Drama with lo-fi aestethics and vulnerable acting from newcomers Tom Cullen & Chris New. Opens Friday exclusively at the Harris Theater.
“The Skin I Live In“- Inspired by the French shocker “Eyes Without A Face” brings Spanish Auteur Pedro Almovodar’s attempt to add horror elements to his usual melodrama in this twisted Thriller about a widowed Plastic Surgeon (Antonio Banderas) who imprisons a beautiful woman (Elena Anaya) so he can cultivate a new skin impervious to fire.
“The Sitter“- Jonah Hill stars in this Action-packed Comedy as the world’s worst babysitter entrusted with caring for 3 unruly children in an overnight adventure on the mean streets of New York City. From Indie Writer/Director David Gordon Green, the maker of such films as the angst-filled Drama “George Washington” and the stoner Comedy “Pineapple Express”.
“Young Adult“- “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody returns, with help from that movie’s Director Jason Reitaman in a pitch-black Dramedy involving a writer (Charlize Theron) of Novels for teens who finds out you can’t always go home, especially after figuring out she may not be able to reunite with her former high school flame (Patrick Wilson) who has long ago moved on.
“The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo“- Big Studio English Remake of the modest Foreign hit with David Fincher at the helm and on-screen ingenue Rooney Mara in the iconic title role. Mara (who was named after the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art “The Chief” Rooney) plays the computer hacker who is enlisted in assisting a Magazine Publisher (Daniel Craig) in a 40-year old Murder Mystery.
