The annual New Years Day celebration in L.A.’s Little Tokyo has an athletic side. The martial arts performers from the Hollywood Entertainment Academy combine tradition with precision to display amazing, almost super-human, feats.
As you can see in this slideshow, martial arts practitioners take a cue from acrobats and condition their muscles to move in positions that leverage their strength. As you would expect from the name Hollywood Entertainment Academy, they also put on quite a show. They literally set the stage on flame and propel themselves through fire.
The 2012 New Years Day celebration in L.A.’s Little Tokyo starts at 11 a.m. in Weller Court, near the Kyoto Grand Hotel and L.A. City Hall. The program also includes Taiko Drums, Kagamibiraki (a traditional sake barrel opening), Lion Dances, Japanese Folk Songs and Japanese Calligraphy. And best of all, it is Free!
