New Year’s Eve is a fun and festive time of year, and, it is perhaps the busiest party night of the entire year. So, what do you do to make your party different and stand out?
Make sure you get your invitations out early
Most people tend to think and react on a first come, first served basis. The sooner you get your invitations out, the more likely people will respond “yes” to you. It is appropriate to send out invitations for New Year’s Eve parties right after Thanksgiving through the second or third week of December.
Decorations and Party Favors
Make your home feastive with lots of silver and gold. Dress up everything from your buffet table to your front door! Streamers and balloons also help to add to party feeling. One of the better places to shop for decorations and party favors in Manhattan is the chain store Party City (located at 38 West 14th St in Manhattan). Party City is offering pre-made kits for parties as small as 10 people up to as large as 300 people. Visit Party City at their Manhattan location or visit them online at: http://www.partycity.com/category/holiday+parties/new+years+party+supplies.do
Like it or not, food has a lot to do with the success of a party. If you offer low-quality food people will remember it, and, even worse, you may find people leaving your party for other parties. Buffets work best for New Year’s Eve parties. Try to keep everyone in mind. Just because you love fish doesn’t mean everyone else does, so, be sure to offer a good variety including a vegetarian dish or two. Here are some menu suggestions:
- Mushroom and goat cheese tarts in mini phyllo cups
- Shrimp with cocktail sauce
- Fried cheese ravoili served with marinara sauce
- Filet mignon crostini
- Assorted cheese and crackers
- Roast turkey with gravy
- Ziti with pesto sauce
- Baked ziti with meat sauce
- Chicken tenders
- Tossed green salad
- Pasta salad
- Potato salad
- Assorted breads and rolls
- Chocolate cake
- Fresh fruit
And, of course, a bar with lots of variety, and be sure to have plenty of champagne on ice. (Keep in mind that 1 bottle of champagne will yield about 6 servings). You should also have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages available to your guests as well — the most common and appreciated non-alcoholic beverages include: sprakling water, bottled water, and sodas.
By all means, have music at your party. It makes for a more festive party atmosphere. If you can’t afford a professional DJ then ask one of your guests to play DJ for the evening — someone who knows how to get the crowd dancing! Offer a good mix of music, but, the key to success is to keep the volume down until everyone has had the chance to eat and socialize a bit. You can start cranking up the volume for dancing around 10PM or 10:30PM at most New Year’s Eve parties.
