Earlier tonight at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas, WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. looked very solid in dispatching former title challenger Peter Manfredo in under five heats. Chavez Jr. captured his title with a close victory over Sebastian Zbik in June in Los Angeles, Calif. in a fight that many felt could have gone either way but he left no room for judgment against Manfredo.
Chavez controlled the early rounds with his range and superior work rate but was outworked in the fourth as Manfredo bit down and turned the tide of the fight. In the fifth a right hand from Chavez would stun Manfredo and send him to the ropes where a subsequent volley of punches would force referee Laurence Cole to halt the action.

With the win Chavez improves his record to 44-0 with 31 knockouts and could be in store for a big 2012. The world-recognized best middleweight, Sergio Martinez, saw the same WBC belt inexplicably stripped from him earlier this year and he was ringside for tonight’s action and will surely be calling for a match with Chavez next year.
Manfredo sees his record fall to 37-7 (20 KO’s) and it was reported by BoxingScene.com’s Ryan Burton that the Providence, Rhode Island fighter announced his retirement after the bout. Manfredo got a taste of fame in 2005 with his involement on NBC’s inaugural edition of The Contender but didn’t have as much success following the show, with TKO losses to Sakio Bika and Joe Calzaghe highlighting his resume after the series.
