Last night in Sinaloa, Mexico, always-charismatic Jorge Arce pulled out a unanimous decision over Angky Angkotta at Plaza de Toros to win the vacant WBO bantamweight crown. The title is Arce’s fifth world championship in his fifth weight division, which includes an interim WBA super flyweight crown that he held for two fights in 2008. If you are to include Arce’s interim belt, it makes him the only Mexican to have won titles in four different weight divisions.
Arce won the WBO junior featherweight crown earlier this year when he pulled off a dramatic upset in stopping Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and made it clear that his move down in weight was all about history, as he fully expects to be moving back to 122 pounds in his next bout.

The hottest commodity in the junior featherweight class appears to be a man who has yet to fight in the division, as Nonito Donaire is eyeing an early 2012 date against either Vazquez Jr. or IBF champion Takalani Ndlovu. If Donaire is successful, Arce will surely be looked at as a high-profile matchup for the Fil-Am fighter sometime in the summer.
At 32 years of age, Arce’s career is in its twilight and a bout with Donaire could serve as his last big fight.
