On the heals of Presidents Obama and Sarkozy having candidly denegrated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while attending the G20 Summit in Cannes last week–the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Iran is, in fact, building a nuclear weapon.
The report was the International Atomic Energy Agency’s most unequivocal yet in suggesting Iran is using the cover of a peaceful nuclear program to produce atomic weaponry. Iran insists it is pursuing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, according to an Associated Press article via FOXNews today.
However, the thrust of the article was not reporting on the report from the IAEA, it was their reporting on the sabre-rattling coming out of Tehran, in response to their fears of a pre-emptive attack upon their nuclear complex by either, or both, Israel and the United States, to whit…
Thursday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, warned Israel and the United States that Tehran’s response will be tough should its archenemies choose a military strike against Iran over the country’s controversial nuclear program.
“Anybody who takes up the idea of an attack on Iran, should get ready to receive a strong slap and an iron fist” by the Iranian armed forces, said Khamenei.
“But Iran will strongly respond to any invasion or attack with such power and in a way that the aggressors and invaders will be smashed from the inside,” said Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters in Iran. His remarks were quoted by state radio.
“The Iranian nation is not a nation that only sits and watches threats coming from straw powers, which are internally eaten by worms,” he added.
The U.S. and its allies are concerned that a nuclear-armed Iran could touch off a nuclear arms race among rival states, including Saudi Arabia, and directly threaten Israel.
However, one couldn’t tell, from the dismissive, snide remarks made by Sarkozy and Obama.
Israel views Iran as an existential threat, citing Ahmadinejad’s calls for Israel’s destruction and Iran’s support for Arab militant groups.
Ahead of the IAEA report’s release on Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak had said that without effective sanctions, Israel would not take any option “off the table,” a reference to possible military action.
Cristiane Amanpour, host of ABC News “Around the World” program, does an excellent job of laying bare the lack of alternative options in dealing Iran’s nuclear program, in her program segment (video embedded in link) titled “Iran and the Bomb.”
Complicating the issue of alternatives is the fact that both Russia and China have business dealings with Iran, in particular Russia’s selling nuclear design, techology, construction and training for Iran’s nuclear program; and both countries providing military hardware and weapons.
Are they simply capitalistic “vendors” doing business with a fiesty rouge nation, either of which could defeat their customer quickly in a military action–or, have they positioned themselves as “protectors” of Iran; and if so, for what reason–oil?
Regardless, after four rounds of failed international sanctions; scientist assassinations; an infection by a top shelf computer “worm” virus; and, the utter failure of President Barack Obama’s plan of “friendly” diplomacy–Iran has still managed to provide intelligence, weapons and training to every anti-west group of combatants in the Middle East, which have killed countless U.S., allied and Israeli troops, and thousands of civilians, in the region.
All of this while thumbing its nose at the world, and threatening to “wipe Israel off the face of the Earth,” and warning the United States the same fate awaits it, should it intervene.
What is the source of Iran’s single-minded, insane, suicidal bravado?
Using an appearance at the United Nations on an anuual basis to deny the Holocaust and September 11th attacks even happened?
And surely they must know that even if they could some day successfully launch a nuclear attack on Israel, that it would result in Iran becoming the third time the United States would use nuclear weapons to quickly annihilate them.
But yet they persist, barking on the global stage.
It should be known that Islam also has a reference to a similar event as “Armageddon,” called “Yawn al-Qiyamah,” or the “Day of Ressurection” [and Judgement], which, like Armageddon, prescribes that it is the “end of days,” or the final judgement day.
And the battle site of this last war is prophecized in nearly every religious writing to be Tel Megiddo, a mountain, overlooking a fertile valley to its west in northern Israel, south of the Lebanon border, near Nazareth–the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
The question being begged…”Is Barack Obama the right man for the job with Israel and Iran, with Armageddon looming on the horizon?”
