There’s nothing like light being displayed in a dark room and watching the roaches scurry away into oblivion.
In what can be described as an action right out of the early 19th century during the sordid slavery days, a Baptist Church in Terre Haute, Indiana voted to ban interracial couples from becoming members of “their” church. Last Sunday, November 27th, the Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church, allegedly representing the Name and love of Jesus Christ, voted 9-6 to bar mixed race couples from joining. Only about 43 people attended that Sunday service and there is no explanation why the voting was so low.http://www.cnn.com/video/?hpt=hp_t3#/video/us/2011/12/02/erin-gulnare-stella-harviille.cnn
The national group that represents the “church” distanced itself from the voting in a statement stating it “neither condemns nor disallows” interracial marriage. The uproar over the apparent racist tactic has created a national firestorm.
Naturally people are falling all over themselves proclaiming “not to be racists”. The track record of people claiming one thing while obtaining another is just too pitiful to behold.
Former Pastor and church member Melvin Thompson who pushed for the vote would not disclose why he did so.
“I am not racist. I will tell you that. I am not prejudiced against any race of people, have never in my lifetime spoke evil about a race, ” said Thompson. It was Thompson who told Ticha Chikuni, a black man, that he couldn’t sing at the church.
The new church leader, Pastor.Stacy and several other church members have been keeping a low profile and have opted not to communicate with the media. Naturally people are claiming “shock” over the vote, but there’s no denying the underlining intention of the vote was far from “godly”.
“We are not a group of racist people,” stated Keith Burden of the National Association of Free Will Baptists. “We have been labeled that obviously because of the actions of nine people”.
What a relief!! There are only 9 racist people in that church of 43!!, alleged Christians yet! We have indeed made social progress!
Excuse me, Mr. Burden, but it took more than the cooperation of nine people to get this vote approved. It was purposefully drafted and submitted to a vote. Who said that “in order for evil to triumph, all it takes is for good people to do nothing”. There were other people sitting on their hands and failing to take a stand that helped get this nasty business executed.
Stella Harville, the female member of the all-white church who has the black fiancé, was also told by a member of the church that her boyfriend could not sing anymore after she and Chikuni worshipped there one service. Stunned by the different actions, Harville noted she felt betrayed by the church.
“It’s like we were kind of blindsided,” Harville said of the church’s actions.
The resolution passed by the church said “it does not condone interracial marriage and ‘parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they be used in worship services and other church functions, with the exception being funerals’”.
Nice!! You can’t be a member, but we’ll bury you.
