This year’s “X Factor” U.K. has had plenty of drama, from the judges feuding with each other to former finalist Frankie Cocozza leaving the show for a drug-related rule violation to heated conflicts between some of the contestants.
The Sunday Mirror is reporting that “X Factor” U.K. judge Kelly Rowland is now battling with Janet Devlin, one of the finalists who is being mentored by Rowland.
According to the tabloid:
Kelly Rowland, 30, is barely talking to Janet Devlin after losing patience with her constant strops … A show source said: “From the outset the line has been that the mentors really care about their categories and look out for their best interests above anything else. But the fact they’re at each others’ throats shows how bad the atmosphere is this series.”
Backstage sources say 16-year-old Janet – originally considered the shyest contestant – has become impossible to work with, refusing to wear outfits picked for her and arguing about song choices. On Thursday night [November 10, 2011] Janet refused to go to a Tinie Tempah gig with her mentor and Misha B.
There might be some truth to this story because Rowland, who normally does not criticize her contestants on TV, made a slight dig at Devlin on “The X Factor” U.K. episode on November 13, 2011. Even though Rowland had praised Devlin’s performance the night before, Rowland changed her evaluation by giving a lukewarm review to Devlin, by saying on the November 13 episode that Devlin’s performance from the previous episode was just “all right.”
Meanwhile, the Sunday Mirror reports that “X Factor” U.K. finalist Kitty Brucknell is “furious” with “X Factor” U.K. judge Louis Walsh (Brucknell’s mentor on the show) because Walsh said in an interview that he thinks Brucknell will not only lose the competition but that she also won’t end up in the final three.
Walsh has been criticized in the media by former “X Factor” contestants (namely, Sami Brooks and Terry Winstanley) and even “X Factor” U.K. judge Gary Barlow, who have all described Walsh as a lazy, uninterested mentor. But given that there have been mutliple times that Brucknell has ended up in the bottom two of getting votes from the public, Walsh’s prediction about Brucknell is not very far-fetched.
“The X Factor” U.K. judge Tulisa Contostavlos could hardly be accused of being an uncaring mentor, after she turned up at a November 12 show at G-A-Y nightlclub in London in a show of support for Johnny Robinson and The Risk, two acts that were voted out of “The X Factor” U.K. on November 6, 2011. Robinson and The Risk both performed at the club, and Contostavlos was seen cheering them on and hanging out with them.
November 19, 2011 update: Rowland is denying the Sunday Mirror’s story about her clashing with Devlin. On the November 19, 2011 episode of “The Xtra Factor” Rowland said of the story:
“That’s not true. Whoever started that story is just a bad journalist, I can’t help that. It’s obviously not true, it’s bad journalism. Get your journalism straight.”
