Though not frequently mentioned by the media, but true none-the-less, is that Jerry Sandusky, the retired Penn State former defensive coordinator who faces 40 criminal charges for child sexual abuse, was a committed church member. On November 20, 2011, the Telegraph took a close look at the parallels between the Sandusky case and the pedophilia scandal of the Catholic Church, while Christian media ponders Sandusky’s religious faith. It has also been stated that Sandusky took at least one of his alleged young victims to church with him. So, where does that leave Sandusky and his walk with Christ? If the allegations are true, can a person be both a Christian and a pedophile?
According to the criminal complaint, Sandusky is accused of “engaging in deviate sexual intercourse with a complainant who was less than 16 years of age and the person was four or more years older than the complainant, and the persons were not married.” The complaint is very graphic and specifically states, “the defendant did engage in penetration, however slight of the genitals or anus of a complainant. He is accused of sexually penetrating victim #4. According to the Grand Jury report, Jerry Sandusky lead a life of grooming children for sex and raped them over a period of more than ten years occurred while Sandusky lived with the Bible Passage Psalms 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God,” handing outside of his garage. Sandusky attended the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in State College, Pennsylvania before the scandal became public.
Some have argued that because Jerry Sandusky attended church faithfully, started a charitable organization, and was seen as a high standing member of his community that he is a Christian, and if the allegations are true; then a Christian who has engaged in despicable and unacceptable behaviors.
Others use Scripture to back up their belief that if Jerry Sandusky were a true Christian, he would have stopped his behaviors. Some look to Hebrews 10:26 where Paul advises the body of Christ that though they will continue to struggle with temptation, those who sin willfully will not receive sacrifice for their sins.
Hebrews 10: 22-27 reads, “ 22Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
26For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. 27But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.”
What do you think about Jerry Sandusky and the allegations? If the State of Pennsylvania proves their case against him, do you think it is possible to be both a Christian and a pedophile?
