On Saturday November 12th, the boxing world was once again darkened by controversy. The Trilogy fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez was supposed to end all doubt between the two from their previous bouts. Unfortunately, it just caused more problems. In a shocking outcome, Manny Pacquiao won via majority decision 114-114, 115-113, 116-112 according to HBO.com.
I had Marquez ahead 115-113, and for the first time since 2005, I was expecting to see Manny Pacquiao walk out of the ring as the loser. The majority of the crowd and Marquez himself were waiting for to have Marquez declared the winner, as Pacquiao’s corner looked on covered in defeat. And in a moment, a great boxing fight, turned into another controversy in a long line of controversies that has plagued this sport. Pacquiao was scored the victory and almost immediately the outcome was booed loudly by the crowd.
After the fight, Pacquiao stated that he clearly won the fight as the majority of the crowd was booing Manny. Marquez was so disgusted with the outcome, that left the ring before getting interviewed. He was cheered by the crowd walked to the dressing rooms. Juan’s performance was one of near perfection as he counter punched his way to what should have been a victory. Marquez kept Manny off balanced the entire fight and looked like he was the better fighter.
During the middle rounds, Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach said we are behind and kept urging Manny to pick it up. Everyone was waiting for Manny to turn it on. Manny’s friend and training partner Amir Khan was doing commentary for the UK coverage and he was stunned by Manny’s poor performance. Khan kept stating that Manny isn’t doing what he was had planned and trained for. Even Khan thought that Marquez won the fight. Commentators in the UK were screaming the fix is in and demanded that the Nevada State Athletic Commission investigate the judges. Social Media outlets have been buzzing over the fight result with most people saying Marquez should have won.
All three fights between Marquez and Pacquiao have ended in controversy but this outcome was the worst. The first fight in 2004 should have went to Pacquiao but a judge made a scoring error. The 2nd fight was very close and could have gone either way but Manny got the split decision victory despite many pundits stating that Marquez should have won. However, in this Trilogy Fight, Marquez clearly looked the part of the victor as he took Manny out of his game plan and had an answer for every punch that Manny threw.
It’s sad that an inspiring performance like this will be wiped away by the incompetence of three judges. Should there be a 4th fight between these two? Absulutely, there should be a fight and it should happen immediately. Team Pacquiao can spin this to try and defend the outcome, but there’s no doubt about it, Marquez was ROBBED!!!
