Haunting films are one of the hardest horror aspects to get right. Most of them really miss the mark, but they keep on churning them out. The latest edition to this genre is Kill Katie Malone, but will it be just another haunting that’s more annoying than actually scary?
Kill Katie Malone follows the story of a group of friends that purchase a box online that has a ghost inside. What they think is just a cool hoax, turns out to be more than they expected and has them fighting for their lives. The story here is a bit silly, but does work for what they are trying to accomplish. Most of the acting is ok enough, but nothing overly special. The overall film felt more like something from the Syfy channel as opposed to a straight to video film, but does have better effects. The film is crafted decently, still feels a bit forced at times. As you move forward with the turmoil these characters are going through you never really feel their state of urgency, which in turns makes you never really take the overall film seriously.
This isn’t a bad film, it is a lower budget straight to video film and never really seems to become more than that. Dean Cain does a fine with the little bit he has to work with, but that’s not much. If you’re a fan of Dean Cain or this genre, then give the movie a shot.
