The challenges of the job hunt can wear down even the most optimistic job seeker. The good news is that you don’t have to go it alone!
Launch Pad Job Club is celebrating 10 years in Austin as a supportive job lead sharing and networking organization that aids jobseekers in keeping their spirits up while searching for the next job. A federally recognized nonprofit organization, Launch Pad Job Club presents free weekly meetings that provide job search resources, information, networking, motivational speakers, a listing of free and fun activities in Austin, door prizes, snacks, and laughter.
By meeting with others who are “in the same boat”, job seekers benefit from the combined resources of other interesting, intelligent, supportive, talented, and inspiring professionals, helping each other survive the challenges of the job hunt.
President and founder Kathy Lansford-Powell began the Job Club in January of 2001 as an assignment to bring more job seekers to the services provided at Workforce Solutions Capital Area. Workforce Solutions offers a wide array of services to job seekers in Travis County, such as career centers, skill training opportunities, resume tweaking sessions, job search resources, mock interview practice and valuable feedback.
The creation of Launchpad Job Club coincided with the dot com bust in Austin, when so many white collar workers found themselves suddenly thrust into a changing job market. By sharing experience, networks and feedback, job seekers learned the value of job search collaboration, and that it is much easier to stay upbeat during a job hunt with mutual support. Receiving information on free, fun events and volunteer opportunities reminds job seekers that it is important to have fun while you are looking for a job, and that staying energized and upbeat is vital to meeting new people outside of your usual network and being more attractive to new contacts.
The job search process can vary a great deal depending upon the specific type of work you are looking for. On the Launch Pad Job Club website you can find a calendar with meeting times for the growing number of “clublets” and “SWAT” teams that have formed to offer a more intimate group for members to share their specific challenges, experiences and information about searching for jobs in their chosen fields:
