Leverage returned with the first of eight new episodes from season 4 Sunday night with “The Experimental Job,” and yes, it was just as good as ever.
Leverage “The Experimental Job” recap: Undercover in a psych experiment
First of all, everyone did what they do best: Eliot hit, Hardison hacked, Parker stole, Sophie grifted, and Nate played the mastermind. Nate had everything under control from the moment he stepped into the classroom as the professor. As soon as he presented the prisoner’s dilemma, you knew it would come up again, especially when he leaned in close to tell Travis if he didn’t betray his partner he’d go to jail for a long time.
Meanwhile, Hardison was undercover as a student and Eliot as a homeless veteran to get into the experiment. The stark differences between their two experiences were shown in parallel scenes which were among the best of the episode. While Hardison was hacking, playing video games, sampling wine, and having Parker do his homework, Eliot was undergoing psychological torture—and dishing out some of his own (psychological and physical)—as he uncovered that the psych experiment was really a way of finding new ways to create PTSD. No one else could’ve handled that situation, and Eliot was obviously the right person for the job.
There were some advances in the two relationships of the team as well. While the next episode, “The Office Job,” will have more about Nate and Sophie, there was that awkward moment when Nate was caught checking out Sophie. Eliot summed it up best with “wow.” Meanwhile, Parker was undercover as Hardison’s date at the party, and that meant a few kisses. That’s nothing new for these two, and though they did have a bit of an argument over him blowing her off for video games, she came to his rescue and they haven’t taken a step back. Their relationship continues to progress in a way that is true to the characters, and it’s one of the reasons why Leverage is as good as it is. Yes, there are personal relationships among the team members, but the focus remains on the jobs at hand.
Leverage “The Office Job” preview: Hardison left hanging
The job itself this week was a good one as well. Nate’s use of the prisoner’s dilemma was worth watching, and it was just the right episode to get fans excited about the show again after the midseason hiatus. Even without an Eliot fight on-screen, it was a strong episode. Will the rest of the season continue that streak?
