This is probably the number one question that people ask: what do you recommend for personal protection and/or concealed carry?
Let’s discuss several factors that would contribute to helping address this issue:
Are you a man or woman? How big are your hands and what feels most comfortable? How do you plan to carry the gun; waist, small of back (SOB), or shoulder rig? What caliber can you shoot accurately; .380, 9mm, 40 S&W or .45cal? What is your budget to spend on a gun? Revolver or semi-auto, which type is best for you? Single or double action?
All of these are important factors to consider before making your purchase. There is much debate as to what is the best defensive and personal protection caliber. We will not be addressing this issue as the debate never ceases to end. A well placed shot with a good personal protection hollow-point or P+ ammunition will do the job in most situations.
Clearly, size and location of carry or storage are key considerations. Most often a compact or sub-compact gun are best to effectively conceal. For the purpose of providing a broad spectrum of shooting ability we will look at guns ranging in caliber from .380 to .45 cal. Barrels ranging from 2″ to 4″ are going to be best for most concealed carry applications. The choice between revolver and semi-auto is a personal one. Each has it’s own advantage with a revolver being reliable and a semi-auto having a higher capacity.

Best advice would be to go to a range that allows for rental of several guns to test fire and see what feels most comfortable and can be shot accurately. Another option would be to try out guns that friends, family or neighbors already own to see which one works and fits you best. Then buy a holster, take your concealed carry course and continue to practice, practice and practice.
