In a curious piece in the mainstream media yesterday, E.J. Dionne, Jr. of the Washington Post floated the notion that the GOP race for the Republican Presidential nomination ‘may be over already.’
Dionne contends that with Mitt Romney’s margin of victory in the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 10 and a possible squeaker victory in Iowa next Tuesday, the former Massachusetts Governor would have the ‘one-two punch’ necessary to propel him to the nomination with very little serious opposition.
Romney has a 20-point lead over the second place contender in New Hampshire. And some polls in Iowa show that he has overtaken Ron Paul, although within the margin of error, for first place.
But Dionne is not the only pundit saying that Romney may have the nomination wrapped up. Peggy Noonan, writing in the Wall Street Journal today, implies the very same thing, stating that Newt Gingrich has been a ‘gift to Romney,’ allowing the Massachusetts Governor to ‘beat a heavyweight.’
Herein lies the bone that the American public has to pick with the mainstream media, the pundits, and the two major political Parties, which comprise what has become known as the ‘permanent, elitist ruling class.’ The elites would like for the race to be wrapped up now, with Romney as the nominee. In one accord the media outlets, high profile political consultants, and the bigwigs in both Parties have made it clear they prefer a Romney vs. Obama Presidential race. The media believes Obama can beat Romney. So do the pundits and the Democrats. And the Republican elites can breath a sigh of relief that the ‘establishment’ will not be threatened by the dreaded ‘ignorant hayseed conservatives from the South or Midwest.’ And the payoff for the media is that should Obama lose, it knows that Romney has enough of the Eastern Liberal Establishment in him to prevent him from rocking the apple cart.
This is precisely what gave rise to the Tea Party and to some degree the ‘Occupy’ movement. Americans in the heartland are overwhelmingly tired of politics as usual, and they want the Party elites, both Republican and Democrat, ousted. Voters succeeded in doing exactly that, to a degree, in 2010. And every indication is that they wish to finish the job in 2012.
But such a goal is much easier when it comes to Congress. When it comes to the Presidency, the vast, powerful, and rich political machine has built a wall around the office, a fortress of money, influence, and power that allows very few who oppose the elitist establishment to get through. Reagan got through, but most believe that his monumental and historic success was an aberration in modern American politics. Such things are not supposed to happen. And it is to be remembered that the elitist establishment of the GOP fought Reagan tooth and nail every step of the way.
However, the pundits may have this one wrong if they think Romney is a shoo-in. Due to the work of several skilled individuals, including Mike Ridgway, the GOP changed the rules in 2010 to mandate that delegates be awarded to candidates on a sliding scale rather than a ‘winner-take-all’ system. Thus, in Iowa, for example, even if Romney wins, he will not take all of the delegates. And his margin of victory will be so thin that whoever takes 2nd place will receive a significant number of delegates. This could result in a protracted race for the nomination, leading right up to the convention in the summer. This would also give ‘the people’ a chance to choose a candidate that has not been shoved down their throats by the media, Karl Rove, Dick Morris, or the RNC.
Thus, once again, the political landscape in America will be most precarious in 2012. It will be ‘We the People’ vs. The Elitist Washington Establishment that simply does not understand the values and mindset of the ordinary folk who live outside the beltway.
If the Party bosses do not quickly learn the deep and abiding mistrust and outright disgust the American people have with the entire leadership establishment, both Republican and Democrat, then the country will be pushed even closer to the brink of civil unrest as ‘we the people’ express their anger in more tangible ways.
All of this can be avoided, of course, when Washington begins to truly listen to the American people.
