Commentary from the liberterrain…
Dear Mr. Buchanan,
Published the day after Christmas, you pleaded in the American Conservative magazine for an answer to your article’s headline, “Whose Country Is It, Anyway?”
“How,” you asked, “did America come to be a nation where not only have all Christian prayers, pageants, holidays and holy days been purged from all government schools and public institutions, but secularism has taken over those schools, while Christians are mocked at Christmas in ways that would be declared hate crimes were it done to other religious faiths or ethnic minorities?”
Being a handmaiden to big government (you were “a senior adviser to American Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan” Wikipedia reminds us) you likely didn’t recognize the answer embedded in your own question.
The answer is: “government schools and public institutions.”
When schools and institutions are government run they are captive to whoever runs government. When Christians ran things Christianity was everywhere. Now that secularists run the show its secularism that dominates.
Had America gone libertarian from its founding all schools and institutions would be private along with virtually all other property in the country.
So today we might have Christian and Muslim and Jewish and secular and open-to-all schools and institutions, and what they say or do and display is no business of anyone else as long as they all observe the libertarian non-aggression principle.
That principle – no initiation of force, intimidation or fraud – begins with individual property rights. Without property rights no other rights are possible.
“In Santa Monica, atheists were granted 18 of 21 plots in a public park allotted for holiday displays and,” you bemoan, “erected signs mocking religion.”
There’s that “public” again. Individuals or voluntary community organizations or companies that own parks can display whatever they want and you would then be free to enjoy or ignore their displays.
In the Wisconsin statehouse,” you note, “a sign informs visitors, ‘Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.'”
That statehouse is public.
“YouTube,” you lament, “shows denizens of Occupy D.C. spewing gratuitous hatred of a couple who dared to appropriate a small patch of McPherson Square to set up a living Nativity scene.”
McPherson Square? Public park.
You statist conservatives, along with your fellow-traveling statist liberals on the flipside of your mutually beloved big government wooden nickel, have no one to blame but yourselves.
