Miami Dade Shelter along with a local non-profit Corporation called Pawsitive 4 Life have created a program to transport dogs from the high kill Miami Dade Shelter to no kill shelters in several states. Currently, the Miami Dade Shelter has a kill rate of 65%. By transporting the dogs to shelters that guarantee their safety this will reduce the burden on the Miami Dade Shelter and help lower the kill rate there.
Currently, Pawsitive 4 Life, will be raising funds to help with the transport of these dogs (vehicle, gas and tolls). Chip Ins will be created for each group and photos and descriptions will be provided. The public can donate to this special program. The No Kill Shelters are assisting with other costs related to each dog.
Right now, the dogs that will be eligible for this program will be dogs and puppies that are at or past the due out dates which can be of any size, age or breed. Although focus will be on the mixed breeds that are large and medium sized, bully breeds dogs (pit bulls in particular) and seniors that are in good health for transport. Local adopters and rescues will always take precedence over any dogs considered for transport. The program may be expanded to include cats in the near future.
Melissa Sorokin, Volunteer Coordinator at the Miami Dade Shelter, is spearheading this program along with the help of Bonnie and Amy at Pawsitive 4 LIFE. Melissa can be reached at 305-418-7144 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org . Special thanks to Director Alex Munoz for approving this program and to Debi Day from No Kill Miami for her insight and advice on how to locate no-kill shelters across the United States. As of November 14th, Debi Day has been asked to join the transfer program in a consultant capacity to determine the status of the shelter’s policies: Kill vs No Kill”. What great news this is!
Update: The first transport of 4 dogs has been completed to H.A.L.O. the only no-kill animal shelter in Indian River County, Florida. Visit Pawsitive 4 Life on Facebook to stay tuned on the second transport.
