An article published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, which is a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, makes references to existing scientific literature in order to build a framework which can explain these positive effects on health.
Britta Hölzel, of Justus Liebig University and Harvard Medical School, has commented that the goal of this work is to “unveil the conceptual and mechanistic complexity of mindfulness, providing the ‘big picture’ by arranging many findings like the pieces of a mosaic.” By using this approach to understand the mechanisms of mindfulness, Hölzel and her co-authors have pointed out that what we think of as mindfulness is not actually just one single skill. Rather, mindfulness is a multi-faceted mental practice which encompasses several mechanisms. These authors have identified four components of mindfulness which may account for its effects: “attention regulation, body awareness, emotion regulation, and sense of self.”
Hölzel has said that understanding the relationships which exist between these components, and the brain mechanisms which underlie them, will allow clinicians to better use mindfulness interventions for their patients. It herein becomes clear that mindfulness is not a vague cure-all. To achieve effective mindfulness meditation training and practice are necessary. Successful mindfulness meditation has distinct measurable effects on our subjective experiences, on our behavior, and on our brain function. Clearly mindfulness meditation offers promise as a very effective manner to relax and achieve better health in mind, body and spirit naturally.
