The newest version of the USCHO Men’s Division I hockey poll came out today and after moving four positions due to a sweep of now #20 North Dakota, your new number one team are the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who also received a majority of first place votes as well. Coming in at #2 this week, Boston College split weekend games with Maine and Massachusetts. WCHA western power Colorado College comes in at number three followed by Michigan and Western Michigan, who split a series in Ann Arbor this past weekend.
The second group of five, also known as the “B’s” for lack of a better term starts at #6 with Merrimack who boast a deceiving 7-0-1 record. It’s a question of who they’ve played among other factors. Notre Dame and Ferris State come in from the CCHA as #7 and #8 respectively with Ferris State sweeping Bowling Green over the weekend as Notre Dame went 0-0-2 with Northern Michigan. Ties are better than losses to both pollsters and the Pairwise and we’ll see latter examples in January when I revert to the Pairwise rankings. #9 and #10 this week were Union, who is quietly making a move and Minnesota-Duluth who were your champions in the spring.
The “C” group starts at #11 with Lake Superior State, followed by #12 Denver, #13 Yale (Weren’t they picked to finish #1 in the ECAC?), #14 Northern Michigan, and a surprise #15 in Michigan Tech. Denver went 0-1-1 with UMD, Lake Superior State hosts Ferris State this weekend, Yale split games with Cornell and Colgate, Northern Michigan won shootouts versus Notre Dame (tied in both games for polling purposes), and Michigan Tech split a series with Minnesota State.
Finally, the “D and F Troupe” at #16 begins with Boston University and continues at #17 with Dartmouth, #18 Colgate, #19 Quinnipiac and #20 North Dakota who fell one more spot than did BU (five spots to four for BU) with the sweep at the hands of #1 Minnesota.
My take this week: Minnesota is finally showing some salt, pepper, and other condiments.
