MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines will hold the 2011 Miss Earth beauty contest next month after Thailand cancelled the event due to massive flooding.
Now on its 11th year, the pageant will be held in December 3th. This year’s theme is “Smile for Earth, for All.’’ The reigning Miss Earth is Nicole Faria who visited the country recently. Other details of the pageant will be announced soon.
This would have been the first time that the environment-friendly beauty pageant will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. But organizers decided to change the venue, following the massive flooding which continues to submerge many areas of the country for several weeks now.
“As much as we are all excited with bringing Miss Earth to Thailand this year, with the present condition of the country, the pageant will be back in Manila,’’ organizers said, in a statement.
At least 90 contestants are expected to join this year’s Miss Earth beauty contestthey will be joined by the reigning Miss Earth, Nicole Faria of India.
Faria represented India in the Miss Earth 2010 beauty pageant in Vietnam, and was crowned Miss Earth 2010
She won the Miss Talent, the first special award in the 10th Miss Earth pageant. She performed a graceful belly dance that combined Oriental and Middle Eastern style in an event that raised $50,000.00 US Dollars, which was donated to the HCM City Red Cross, to support flood victims in the central region of Vietnam. She wore a shimmering white and gold outfit and defeated 17 other finalists.
Faria has been in the modeling business since 2005. She has shot for fashion magazines like Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Vogue among others. She has also walked the ramp in the Lakme Fashion Week, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, and Colombo Fashion Week.
The 90 or so candidates are expected to arrive in Manila beginning November 17 together with the reigning Miss Earth, Nicole Faria of India. Coronation Night will be on Saturday, December 3, 2011.
The Miss Earth 2011 coronation night will be held on Dec. 3 at the University of the Philippines Theater in Diliman, Quezon City.
The Miss Earth winner serves as the spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and other environmental organizations.
The show will be aired live by Star World at 8:00 p.m. while ABS-CBN Channel 2 will air it nationwide on Sunday, December 4 at 10:30 p.m. There will also be a delayed telecast of the show on The Filipino Channel and on the television stations of some participating countries. The pageant will also be shown on TFC at a later date.
