On Saturday, GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Attorney General Eric Holder should either resign immediately or be fired over his handling of the “Fast and Furious” gun-walking scandal.
According to The Associated Press:
Romney tells reporters after a rally in New Hampshire that Eric Holder has misled Congress and has “brought shame” on the Justice Department through his handling of Operation Fast and Furious.
Operation Fast and Furious involved more than 2,000 weapons purchased by straw buyers at Phoenix-area gun stores. Nearly 700 of those guns have been recovered — 276 in Mexico and 389 in the United States, according to ATF data as of Oct. 20.
Matthew Boyle of the Daily Caller reported that Romney and his campaign has dodged questions over the issue since early October, when he spent 35 seconds explaining why he would not answer a “yes or no” question on the subject.
David Martosko wrote in October that Romney told a teenage girl she could ask a question if he could answer “yes or no”:
When she couldn’t come up with a yes-or-no, The Daily Caller asked one.
“Governor, should Eric Holder resign over ‘Fast and Furious’? That’s a yes-or-no question, governor.”
After Romney initially ignored the question, The Daily Caller asked it a second time.
Romney wheeled around, took a break from shaking hands, signing autographs and answering voters’ questions, and took 35 seconds to explain why he wouldn’t answer the yes-or-no question.
A spokesman for Romney issued a conditional call for Holder’s resignation a couple days later, according to Boyle, who adds that Romney has also refused request for interviews on the subject.
Romney joins former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and fifty-two Congressmen, Sens. Johnny Isakson of Georgia and James Inhofe of Oklahoma and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal in calling for Holder’s immediate resignation.
Earlier in the week, Holder lashed out at a reporter for the Daily Caller and demanded the outlet quit publishing articles about the calls for his resignation:
As Holder’s aide was escorting the attorney general offstage following his remarks Tuesday afternoon at the White House, a Daily Caller reporter introduced himself and shook Holder’s hand. The reporter asked him for a response to the growing chorus of federal legislators demanding his resignation.
Holder stepped towards the exit, then turned around, stepped back toward the reporter, and sternly said, “You guys need to — you need to stop this. It’s not an organic thing that’s just happening. You guys are behind it.”
Holder then walked offstage without answering TheDC’s request for comment about calls for his resignation.
