This is the season for school officials or employees to be caught with their pants down, or at least making videos of others without clothes on. Patrick J. Lott, 54, of Somerset New Jersey, was arraigned yesterday on 22 counts of invasion of privacy and more than two dozen counts of child endangerment from second to fourth degree. Police investigated allegations of improper conduct in mid-December which led to a search of Lott’s home. Numerous videos were found of nude boys showering at Immaculata High School where Lott volunteers. A camera was discovered installed in the common bathing area.
At least 22 victims have been identified and notified. The tapings have been ongoing for since Jauary 2008, and nine of the boys are still under 16. Lott was arrested on December 23, and bail was set yesterday at $500,000. He is also restricted from contact with the victims, any child under 16, and any of the staff at the school. He has been the assistant principal at Bernardsville Middle School and has been relieved of duties there.
If convicted, Lott could face the following maximum fines and sentences:
- Invasion of privacy: $15,000 and 3-5 years per count
- Child endangerment:
Second degree: $150,000 and 5-10 years per count
Third degree: $15,000 and 3-5 year per count
Fourth degree: $10,000 and up to 18 months in jail
Other cases in 2011 involving school officials charged with having sex with children or videotaping sexual acts:
- Penn State Jerry Sandusky–52 criminal counts of sexual assault against boys
- John Allen Wright of Concord, Maine–charged with raping and videotaping the assaults of three disabled boys, and had 10,000 child porn pictures on his computer
- Paramus Catholic High School Official and Teacher accused of Sex with Students on Overseas Trip
Sex with children is a crime no matter how or with whom it is done. It is just more reprehensible when it is done by parents or teachers or others entrusted with the direct care and training of the youngest and most vulnerable among us.
