Sanctum begins with establishment of the setting which is done beautifully. Beginning outside, we are led first to the cave then into it, and finally to the forward base. As exploration of the cave takes place character development is delivered as well. When the tropical storm hits and panic sets in we are invested enough in the film to get a very good sense of what it would be like to be trapped in a cave. Based on a true story, the realism and emotional impact of the film are very good.
Acting was pretty good in Sanctum with Roxburgh doing well as the tough, closed off cave diver leader. Gruffudd did nicely as antagonist and played well against Roxburgh. Wakefield also did well and seemed to have good energy with the rest of the cast. The remainder of the supporting cast did nicely.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were very well done with a solid, realistic feel throughout the film. Effects used to enhance the film were exceptionally well done with seamless integration. The result was scenery and a feel that was very well done. Dialogue was good, as were sound and soundtrack.
Overall Sanctum is a very enjoyable Action Thriller with just enough humor, emotion, thrill, and suspense to balance the movie and hold audience attention well. Adventure fans will enjoy this the most, along with some drama genre fans.
With some foul language, violence, and disturbing images of death this should be fine for older teens and above.
