“The Adventures of Tin Tin”
3.5 out of 4 Movie Beans
Starring: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis and Daniel Craig
French journalist Tin Tin is thrown into a perilous mystery when he buys a model ship called the Unicorn at the market. Suddenly he is being followed, issued threats and even kidnapped! Whatever secrets the model ship holds, they are worth killing for. Along with his dog Snowy and his new friend, the drunken Captain Haddock, Tin Tin must solve a mystery that is lifetimes old. He must also outwit the villain and avoid catastrophe along the way. Will he be able to unearth the ‘Unicorn’s secrets before it is too late?
If you were a Tin Tin fan as a kid, you were probably incredibly excited to hear that a full length movie was coming out to celebrate the Herge classics. Well, you should still be excited as I’m sure it won’t disappoint you. The film is filled with the spirit of adventure and over the top chase scenes to boot. Spielberg and Jackson used computer graphics to put together a beautifully executed film. The movements of the characters are fluid and lifelike, but the facial construction lends much more to the original drawings. Having said that, if you’ve seen Lord of the Rings even once, it’s easy to pick Andy Serkis out of the lineup. What I personally really appreciated about the story is that they didn’t skimp out too much on the violence but they didn’t go overboard with it either. It’s so strange that when a kids movie comes out, people get very up in arms about violence, but then let their children watch far more graphic films like “Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon”. I know they are just robots, but ripping each other apart, with fluid gushing everywhere is far worse than a few CG pirates being slashed before quickly cutting away. Overall it is a great film, with humour and adventure.
Special Movie Bean Salute: Andy Serkis, master of CG movement.
“The Adventures of Tin Tin” is opening in Ottawa on December 21st, 2011. Check Cinemaclock Ottawa for local showtimes.
