Thursday was the day that fans of Natlie Wood have been anticipating for 30 years. 30 years ago Natalie Wood drowned in November, 1981 at the age of 43. Yesterday Los Angeles police have announced that they are opening the case back up for investigation. 30 years ago during a yachting trip with her husband, Robert Wagner and friend Christopher Walken, Natalie Wood fell overboard and drowned. At the time the death was ruled an accidental drowning, even though investigations showed Natalie had 7-8 glasses of wine and that there had been recent marital fights.
Rumors floated around for years that Natlie was murdered. It was thought by many people that Robert Wagner acting alone, or in conjunction with others, murdered his wife, Natalie. Wagner has did not talk at the inquest due to his extreme grieft. The Wagners had been married 9 years at the time of the drowning.
Natalie was a well loved movie star at the time of her death. She had starred in movies such as Rebel Without A Cause, West Side Story, Gypsy, and Splendour in the Grass. Natalie was just nine when her acting career soared with Miracle on 34th Street. The movie, playing yearly usually right after the Macy’s parade, launched Natalie into stardom. At the time of her death she had over 50 film and movies made.
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Police officially reopened the case. With new evidence presented by Natalie’s sister, and the yacht captain changing his account of the night of the drowning. The new information has not been released officially, however, the fans of Natalie are hoping that the mystery surrounding her death will be solved.
Robert Wagner has proclaimed his innocence and he finally spoke out several years ago, posting a webpage depicting his life and love with Natalie. Over the years there have been rumors of foul play, but nothing with enough substance to change the findings from accidental to murder as the cause of death. Robert Wagner’s publicist stated today that Wagner is approving of the new investigation.
Although no one in the Wagner family has heard from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department about this matter, they fully support the efforts of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department,” Wagner’s spokesman, Alan Nierob, said in a statement. – source LA Times
Wagner trusts “they will evaluate whether any new information relating to the death of Natalie Wood Wagner is valid, and that it comes from a credible source or sources other than those simply trying to profit from the 30-year anniversary of her tragic death.
Robert later played sucessfully in the tv series, It Takes A Thief and Hart to Hart. Recently Robert has advertised reverse mortgage products for senior citizens. A handful of seniors, who still believe Wagner responsible for Natalie’s death, will not even consider reverse mortgages, since he is involved in advertising the product.
Hopefully the reopened case will either present new evidence or put to rest all the rumours. After 30 years it is about time to solve the mystery surrounding the death of Natalie Wood. Check out the photo slideshow to the left to see the beauty of this talented you star.
