As Santa Clara County’s Avoid the 13 anti-DUI campaign gears up for its final weekend, the halls of Santa Clara County Jail have been decked with nearly 300 drunk drivers.
Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Jose Cordoza said that between December 16 and December 29, 294 DUI arrests had been made by law enforcement agencies throughout the South Bay. While that may seem like a lot, there were 397 DUI arrests made last year during the same time period.
Cordoza said no deaths have been reported, but there was one DUI-related collision that resulted in injury.
Officers will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in unincorporated San Jose for the New Year’s weekend and final days of the campaign.
Funding for the extra enforcement is being provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
