Maybe after voting Today you might decide to watch a DVD to relax. If that is the case (and I hope so); here are the new releases for not only Pittsburgh, but Nationwide on November 8, 2011.
“13“- Writer/Director Géla Babluani does an English remake of his tension-filled Thriller and 2006 Cannes Award winner, “13 Tzameti”. An all-star cast, consisting of Sam (“Brighton Rock”) Riley, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Ray Winstone, Emanuelle Chriqui & Michael (“Take Shelter”) Shannon, certainly helps in a “by the numbers” redo that pales in comparison.
“Beautiful Lies“- French charmer Audrey Tautou (“Amelie”) stars in another whimsical romantic Comedy about a woman who pretneds a love letter she recieved was meant for her recently divorced mom in efforts to cheer her up. Mischievous fun by the maker of “Priceless” (which featured Tautou)– Director Pierre Salvadori. Available only on Import DVD with English Subtitles (also click there for the Trailer), long before any other format debut.
“Film Socialisme“- Jean-Luc Godard, the Godfather of the French “New Wave”, returns with this latest piece, an indecipherable expose of extraneous ideas. Filmed aboard a cruise ship with its passengers’ musing on their lives and experiences; which coincidentally seems to mirror Godard’s characters and themes from quite a few of his highly regarded & influential works. Also available only to purchase on Import DVD.
“The Light Thief“- Set in Kyrgyzstan, a former Soviet Republic that was taken from Central Asia and now with the fall of Russia, a lonely lost satellite country loyal to no one. From there the story centers on a pole-climbing electrician who helps his down on their luck fellow villagers by stealing electricity. Illuminating by shining a light on not only an old world culture but, their sometimes painful path into finding a modern existence. Yet another only to buy Import DVD with English Subtitles
“Putty Hill“- Brought to us by those fine folks at the Cinema Guild comes a visually-striking experimental Drama, shot Documentary-style film. After the recent death of a young man in Northeast Baltimore, Md., an entire group of young people are shown, revealing a relief of a strong family involved in a growing community.
