For the first time since the Raiders moved back to Oakland, both local teams are on TV at the same time, on opposite networks, turning Sunday afternoon into the TV Battle of the Bay.
NFL schedulers have been perfect up till now at being able to position each team in contests that allow them to air exclusively in a particular time slot. In truth, they initially did so this week as well. The Raiders were originally supposed to face the Packers at 10 a.m., followed by the 49ers at the Cardinals at 1:05 p.m.
Then CBS decided that Raiders-Packers should be its primary matchup of the day, the second half of its doubleheader, the one it sends to most of the country, and the one it protects from being flexed by NBC. So CBS moved it to the afternoon slot opposite the 49ers.
The Jets and Giants have aired in separate games at the same time in the Big Apple, but this is the first time it’ll occur here. So who’ll win the viewership battle? Well, each team’s fans will choose its own squad. For all others, it’s a no-brainer: you gotta go with the Silver and Black against the defending Super Bowl champs.
The 49ers have already clinched their division and are playing the disappointing Cardinals. Almost no one outside of NorCal and Arizona gets this game.
Meanwhile the Raiders have a shot at knocking off an undefeated team in front of national audience. If you can stomach Jim Nantz and Phil Simms, this is the one to watch.
KPIX channel 5 kicks Sunday off with the Chiefs at the Jets, a CBS regional telecast at 10 a.m. that’s of interest to Raiders fans.
At 1:05 p.m., KTVU channel 2 has the 49ers-Cardinals regional Fox matchup, also on KNBR 680 AM and 107.7 FM The Bone.
At 1:15 p.m., it’s the second half of CBS’ doubleheader, Raiders-Packers on channel 5, also on Live 105 FM.
KNBR 1050 AM has ESPN Radio coverage of NFL scores and updates, a free alternative to keep up with games we don’t get here.
Sunday night’s NBC matchup pits the Giants against the Cowboys, 5:30 p.m. on KNTV channel 11 and 1050 AM.
ESPN’s Monday night tilt is meaningless: the Rams at the Seahawks, 5:40 p.m., also on 1050 AM.
Thursday’s Week 15 contest has the Jaguars at the Falcons, 5:25 p.m. on NFL Network and 1050 AM.
All NFL matchups are on Sirius.
This week is a huge opportunity for the Raiders to knock off a powerhouse in front of the whole country. Can they avoid laying an egg as they did last week in Miami? Bay Area NFL fans: have your remote ready.
