Dec. 30, 2011 – Oklahoma Sooners’ wide receiver Jaz Reynolds bruised his kidneys during the Sooners’ loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys and he spent more than a week in the hospital the final month of classes. A kidney injury is dangerous stuff and something no college kid should ever have to face. Now, he will miss the Sooners’ Insight Bowl game against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Dec. 30.
“Even before that, his kidney wasn’t functioning properly. And then it got it badly bruised,” Sooners’ head coach Bob Stoops said. “It was a bad situation there for a full week. He’s still walking around gingerly and sore.”
While Jaz Reynolds will not play in the Insight Bowl, he is expected to return next season.
“The plan from here, there’s a couple of options,” Stoops said. “I’m not going to cover them all, but they’ll, as a family, decide what they’re going to do. But he is expected to be able to play next year.”
Much like they did in the regular season, the Sooners head into this big game shorthanded. Ryan Broyles’ college career ended a couple of months ago. Reynolds is now out. That leaves Kenny Stills as the only remaining starter at wide receiver. Backup receivers Sheldon McClain and Justin McCay are not practicing with the team leading into the bowl game, and likely are gone next season.
That leaves freshman Kameel Jackson and Trey Franks as possible starters alongside Stills with Dejuan Miller and deep snapper James Winchester in as backups. Defensive back Joe Powell has also moved to receiver to provide depth.
“Joe is ready,” Stoops said. “He’s really gathered things back up quickly and has done a nice job through the last week and a half.”
If Reynolds returns to the Sooners in 2012, he will be a starter. Jackson gets this Insight Bowl to prove he is ready to step up next season. He has nine receptions for 120 yards in ten games so far for Oklahoma. Trey Franks will also be back for his junior year. Freshmen Trey Metoyer, Durron Neal, Sterling Shepard and Derrick Woods also join the team, looking for a chance to start in 2012.
The Sooners will be loaded at wide receiver in 2012 but the talent will be young, and in the case of Reynolds, unsure how they will respond.
