As year-end holiday festivities for 2011 begin across the country, many Brazos Valley towns are celebrating with themes that call to mind old-fashioned activities. From pioneer days to Victorian splendor to hometown warmth, Brazos Valley communities bring the past into the present. Here are a few area events with old-fashioned flavor.
Sat Nov 26: Twilight Firelight at the Fanthorp Inn in Anderson, Texas – Music, cowboy poetry, living history characters, and possibly a stage coach ride entertain visitors in a pioneer setting. Fanthorp Inn is part of the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park complex. Activities begin at the Grimes county courthouse in Anderson from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Fri Dec 2: Tinseltown Parade and Stroll in Downtown Brenham, Texas – Live music, parade, merchant displays, and Gingerbread Tour of Homes with an opportunity for donations to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Activities run from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Fri-Sat Dec 2-3: Old-Fashioned Christmas on the Square in Caldwell, Texas – Downtown Caldwell lights up its holiday finery on Friday, with shopping and performances on both Friday and Saturday. Among other activities, Saturday brings a singer/songwriter showcase hosted by Cody Hodges and the Linemen. Events scheduled for Friday 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and events start on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
Fri-Sat Dec 2-3: Small Town Christmas Celebration in Bellville, Texas – On Friday night, the historic square of Bellville turns on holiday lights and music, with a parade at 6:00 p.m., live music with The Usual Suspects, and shops open late. Saturday offers another opportunity to shop Bellville, with the centerpiece of the day featuring December Market Day with over 90 vendors and lots of children’s activities.
Sat-Sun Dec 3-4: Victorian Christmas Tour of Historic Houses in Calvert, Texas – Calvert is known for its antique stores, bed and breakfast lodging, and vintage houses. The Victorian Christmas Tour gives folks a chance to see some of the historic homes up close and all dressed up for the holidays. Tours will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
Sat Dec 3, 10, and 17: 1850s Style Christmas – Discover the simple activities of Christmas that families experienced in 1850s Texas and enjoy live music from the period. Barrington Living History Farm is part of the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park complex. Open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each designated Saturday.
