For military job seekers looking to make the leap from military to civilian, finding the resources to help make the transition can be a difficult one, even with the services provided by military assistance. There are resources, however, which can help translate military experience into a civilian career. The Department of Labor’s Transition resources site assists with finding transferable skills to help find work in today’s job market. With 1000’s of qualified applicants for every job, making a military background marketable, takes research.
Not sure how to use the Transition Resources site? CareerOneStop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor will provide valuable information for making the transition. The site includes topics such as:
I want to use my military skills
I want to know more about the Job Market
I need transition resources
Under the transition resources tab, click on the Military to Civilian Occupation Translator. Here, job seekers can complete a search by Military Occupation code (MOC), keyword or search by military occupation by branch. For example, a search of Human Resources Specialist in the Army displays the result of Human Resources Specialist (except for payroll and timekeeping). The results also provides a job description and links to other helpful information.
There are, however, certain MOC codes which do not have a translation to a civilian based job. For example an Infantryman in the Army may not produce results, however, information is provided on the transferable skills, not necessarily a specific job.
If job seekers are not sure which job is right for them, they can also do a search by skills to find the perfect civilian opportunity to utilize their specific skill sets.
