For me to accomplish this is like me jumping. It defies the forces of nature. The cursed gremlins who reside in every computer I touch, have conspired to make my work crash, smash, reconfigure, delete, undo or, my very favorite, disappear – without provocation or cause. (Although my kids have assured me, it’s “probably” all my fault.) Being able to publish anything goes against the laws of nature in my world.
So when UPS delivered a small box with my name on it, I was surprised to discover what appeared to be a book of travel photos. Not ordinary travel photos, but my photos. From my trips to Peru and Ecuador. Then I remembered that sometime back before the holiday spirit grabbed me by the arm and shook me like a rag doll for the rest of the season, I had a late night session on a website, called, Blurb.com, that lets ordinary people (without pilot’s licenses), make their own books.
It sounded too good to be true. Full color photos on every page, with a minimum of 20 pages for only $10.95? Sure buddy!
I stayed up several nights in early December playing with my new online toy. I was able to easily download photos from my harddrive to the online program and drag them onto the page. It was relatively easy to add text and I had options to outline the photos, soften their corners and even make them “bleed.” (that’s publisher talk for placing the photo right up to the edge of the paper) There was a built-in “governor” who yelled at me when he thought I was taking liberties with the software.
But! Would the final result look good? That was the big question and the only way to find out was to “buy.”
So, I bought and now it’s here in my hands. I showed it to my family who all exclaimed, “how did you do this?” (the implication being, “how did YOU do this?”)
Ha! I beemed, like a toddler taking her first steps. I did it!
The book is beautiful and I’m already anticipating my second. Included is a link so you can see my book in it’s entirety. Although I’m pretty sure this tool was made so that people could show teasers and sell their books. I’m giving everyone access to every page. Not just because I’m proud of myself, but because you too can learn this simple process and create your own books to share with your family and friends.
I hope you’ll send me a link to your first book too.
