For those of you out there trying to stay warm and stylish this winter, are you confused about what to wear? Outerwear has become just as much part of an outfit as your blouse or skinny jeans. This is fun, but also the options out there are infinite, so making a choice can be daunting. First of all, do you use the terms ‘coat’ and ‘jacket’ interchangeably? If so, STOP NOW.
Coat – n. an outer garment with sleeves, covering at least the upper part of the body (dictionary.com)
Basically, the coat is the outerwear for winter. It can go over anything. A coat is heavier than a jacket in fashion and functional speech. However, a coat can still be stylish. What a relief! There are several coat trends for winter 2012, including bright patterns, bold solids, and military styles. Do not be afraid to purchase a bold coat. It is ok if it does not match every outfit you wear because the coat is a show piece that is removed once you are in doors. Theoretically, it is covering your outfit, anyway, so it is not obvious if it does not match. Remember, too, that mixing prints, if done right, actual creates some texture and sophistication to your style. So, the moral of the coat story is have fun with it!
Jacket – n. a short coat, in any of various forms, usually opening down the front. Also, the skin of a potato, who knew? (dictionary.com)
Here is evidence of the importance of the difference between the coat and jacket as the definition of a jacket actually uses the word coat; thus, a jacket is essentially a type of coat in that it covers as does a coat, but a jacket is known to be shorter. This lesson in vocabulary is now over.
In today’s world where style is often the result of smart layering, a jacket is a major fashionable addition to an outfit. This is a tidbit that your Managing Director may need to have explained to him when you are wearing your jacket in the office, but suffice it to say a jacket can complete an outfit. A jacket adds polished style to more daring pieces and some spunk to simple silhouettes. If winter were not so darned cold, it would be the best season because of fun options like jackets to spice up your style. Some of the winter fashion jacket trends for 2012 include the classic Chanel style patterned jacket for sophistication, faux shearling styles for edge, and sequins for some pizzazz. As it turns out, the moral of the jacket story is to have fun too!
Stay warm this winter and look great. Just remember a coat and a jacket are not one in the same.
