On Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 Peter Murphy and She Wants Revenge co-headlined at the ACL Live at Moody Theater in Austin, TX. Hussle Club was first to play, followed by She Wants Revenge and then Peter Murphy. About playing together, Murphy had this to say on Facebook:
My bass player and right hand man Jeff Schartoff tipped me off about She Wants Revenge…I like their no pussy-footing convincing blend of Americo/Brit sensibilities with insightful words and testosterone…with a titch of Kole.”
Peter Murphy is an art-school educated rock ‘n roll frontman and lyricist of the highest order. His voice is unmistakable and he’s written songs that transcend genre or time – period,” said Justin Warfield of She Wants Revenge.
Fans have followed Murphy’s career from his days as frontman of Bauhaus, to his album with the late Mick Karn under the moniker Dali’s Car, through his solo career filled with modern rock classics. His professionalism and ability to consistently perform worldwide has earned him the title of “Godfather of Goth.” His home base for two decades has been Turkey and that has had a major influence on his contemporary music.
Murphy’s set list included the following songs: “The Three Shadows, Part I” (Bauhaus song), “Velocity Bird,” “Peace to Each,” “Memory Go,” “Disappearing,” “I Spit Roses,” “Silent Hedges” (Bauhaus song), “I’ll Fall With Your Knife,” “All Night Long,” “Gaslit,” “Hurt” (Nine Inch Nails cover), “In the Flat Field” (Bauhaus song), “A Strange Kind of Love,” “Marlene Dietrich’s Favourite Poem,” “Cuts You Up” and “Ziggy Stardust” (David Bowie cover).
Peter joked with the fans, pretending he wasn’t going to sing “Cuts You Up” and then slipping it into the show as an encore. Bauhaus reformed in 2006 and played at the Coachella festival in Indio, CA. Murphy paid homage to Bauhaus at the Austin concert during the encore by revisiting their cover of “Ziggy Stardust” by David Bowie, and also by playing other Bauhaus songs in his set.
The Secret Bees of Ninth EP is out now on Nettwerk Records. It contains the new single “Seesaw Sway,” plus four unreleased B-sides. His latest album, Ninth, was released on June 7 and is available on Amazon as either a download, CD or vinyl record.
