Another woman lured by cheap prices
Imposter doctor Carlos Guzmangarza aka Carlos Guzman, age 49, was arrested on Thursday. Guzman had assumed the identity of a physicians assistant with a name much like his own and allegedly operated a dermatology clinic in the 2500 block of San Francisco’s Mission Street called the Derma Clinic.
Having no medical license Guzman had claimed the clinic was operated by him and a physician. However, the physician or the real physicians assistant are not affiliated with the clinic according to the district attorney’s office.
The victim, a Daly City woman in the early part of last year, who had sought out liposuction as well as an eye lift procedure had been referred to Guzman who had offered unbelievable low cost price tag of $3,000.
On the day of the procedure Guzman had picked up the woman at her home and drove her to the clinic.
The woman had been told by Guzman to hold the IV bag while he puffed away on a cigar during the procedure.
A few days following the surgery Guzman had shown up at the woman’s home with what he had stated was six pounds of fat that had been removed during her liposuction procedure and had dumped the fat down the woman’s toilet.
Just as other victims of fake doctors something goes terribly wrong. In this case the woman’s abdomen had become infected forcing her to seek out medical care with another physician. Here she had learned that Guzman was indeed a fake. Since that time she has had corrective surgery.
Guzman not only treated the mother but her daughter as well. The daughter received a series of injection with an unknown substance to treat her acne.
Authorities had filed several charges against Carlos Guzmangarza on Friday which had included identity theft and performing an invasive medical procedure without a license including liposuction.
Guzman had the medical equipment to perform liposuction procedures and even had gone as far as passing out business cards offering specials on cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and Botox.
Guzmangarza had been led into court wearing a jail issued orange jumpsuit and led right back out of the court room when his court appointed attorney waved his right to an appearance.
Guzmangarza is also charged with felony counts of false imprisonment and grand theft. Currently he is in custody on a $750,000 bond and could be facing up to twelve years in prison if convicted on all the charges and this is based on just one victim.
According to a statement by District Attorney George Gascon, “The defendant put lives at risk by performing medical procedures he was not licensed or qualified to perform,”. Gascon further acknowledged they are aware this is not a unique case and in this particular case they know there are probably other victims.
According to neighbors in the Mission, Guzman had introduced himself as a doctor having a medical degree from Mexico but was practicing here as a physicians assistant.
If anyone was treated by Carlos Guzmangarza, also known as Carlos Guzman, at the Derma Clinic, located at the 2500 block of Mission Street, San Francisco, please contact investigator Douglas Becker of the Medical Board of California at (408) 437-3680, or Lt. Carlos Sanchez of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office at (415) 551-9500.
This proving choosing the lowest cost around may not be a very good option and could be the most expensive procedure you ever had.
The cost of liposuction is the sum of the non-surgical fee plus one or more of the surgical fees. Non-surgical fees include nursing staff, cost of operating room, pre-operative laboratory tests, post-operative garments and supplies.
