According to a recent poll at Petside.com, 51% of pet owners in America will be buying their pets a gift or two for the holidays. The pet industry reports that $50 billion per year is spent on family pets, with a majority spent around the holidays on food, treats, toys, new beds and collars. This holiday season, consider donating the old goods to a local rescue group or shelter instead of tossing them away.
Most shelters and rescue groups have a website, often with a wish list of items needed. Beds are always in demand at shelters, and instead of throwing away that old collar when a new one is purchased, consider donating.
Below is a list of possible donations that are always appreciated. Most shelters have similar lists.
- Dog bed, towels or other bedding
- Crate, baby gate or dog pen
- Leash and/or collar
By recycling old pet products that are still useable, a donation can be made to help a local Memphis rescue without spending more money on the holidays. Instead of throwing them away, contact one of the groups listed below and see if a donation of this kind would be accepted.
