Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name. –Psalm 103:1
Why should we Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name? Here are just some of the many reasons, as Psalm 103 continues (verses 2-5): Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindnessand tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things,So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (bold emphasis mine).
Blessing the Lord is medicine to our souls! We are blessed to be a blessing, and that starts with Blessing our Creator, from whom all blessings flow! (Ephesians 1:3 and James 1:17). We are to not only bless the Lord, but we are to bless the Lord at all times and praise Him continually (Psalm 34:1). Notice at all times. Not just sometimes, or when we feel like it, but at all times. Why is this? I will give you four more reasons (in addition to those listed above) out of many: For one, because God is God and He is worthy to be praised! He created us and redeemed us from the hands of the enemy! That alone should be enough of a reason to bless The Lord at all times. Secondly, When we Bless the Lord an exchange occurs- a divine connection takes place; and we are connected with our Father in a much more profound way. Thirdly, it is a weapon of warfare. The Bible tells us that our praise scatters the enemy (Psalm 8:2). And fourthly, it matures us as Christians. What do you think of a child who only shows affection to his parents when the child is getting what they want? Or acting appropriately only when they get what they want? And when the child is not getting what they want, they throw a tantrum. We have a name for it- spoiled rotten brat. Well, dare I go there? Adults can be too :-). And blessing God at all times, whether we are getting what we want or not; blessing God through good times and bad matures us, refines us, and makes us stronger, more grateful and disciplined children of God. Receive it brethren! :-). I receive it too! As the old school preachers say “I’m preaching to myself today!”
The Hebrew word for “Bless” is the word “barak” (baw-rak) “to bless God at all times, adoration, to exchange with man a benefit” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). Did you catch the last phrase? Let it get in your spirit- when we bless God, we get a benefit! Isn’t God awesome? It is part of that divine exchange that occurs when we bless the Lord.
The Hebrew word for soul is “nephesh” (neh-fesh) which means “a breathing creature” (Strong’s). Psalm 105:6 declares “let everything that has breath praise the Lord!” Why? Because our very existence is based on blessing and praising the Lord! We were created to praise the Lord! (Isaiah 43:7). And when we do what we were created to do, it causes us to come into agreement and alignment with God, who He is, who He created us to be, and His perfect plan and purpose for us and for our lives. When we bless the Lord, we are making a public declaration to Heaven and to Earth that we agree that we are God’s workmanship, we are His inheritance, and He is indeed worthy to be blessed and praised! When we bless the Lord, through this divine exchange, we are endued with Power from on High (Luke 24:49), we taste and see that the Lord is good! (Psalm 34:8), we are encouraged (The Lord is the lifter of our soul- Psalm 3:3), and the gates of hell cannot prevail against us! (Matthew 16:18). Hallelujah!
But if you would rather squander and forfeit your privilege; sadly that is your choice. But know that if you do, even the rocks will cry out in your place! (Luke 39:40). Please dear friend, I implore you- don’t squander this wonder privilege bestowed upon you by your loving Father and forfeit your divine exchange and power to a rock.
Do you want to shake the very foundation of Hell, and move Heaven and Earth, my brothers and sisters? Then Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Father, I thank you that you have created us to bless You. I thank you that we, your children, have the privilege to bless you Lord and all that is within us. Father, grace us to bless you at all times and stir us up when we do and all that is within us. Make us mighty men and women for you! Men and women who are your workmanship and your inheritance. Father, thank you for blessing us to be a blessing. Thank you Mighty God, that through your Holy Spirit, you will get us excited about blessing you at all times, regardless of how we feel and regardless of our circumstances. We look forward in great anticipation for that divine exchange that occurs every time we bless Your Holy Name! In Jesus Name, we love You, we adore You, we Honor You, and we thank You. Amen and Amen!
Take Action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to bless the Lord at all times and with your whole being. Resist your flesh and the attacks of the enemy by blessing the Lord! It is when you most don’t feel like blessing God is when you most need to Bless Him! For your breakthrough is in your blessing Him! And God wants you to have that breakthrough! He is on your side, He is rooting for you (along with a cloud of witnesses), and He is your Advocate! So keep fighting the good fight, my brothers and sisters! For God has already given you the victory!
May God Bless you and Keep you always.
With warmest regards,
And In Service of The Most High King,
