**** Boardwalk Empire can be viewed on HBO, which for Time Warner premium customers is Channel 603 and Insight Communications customers is Channel 700 respectively. ****
I don’t remember the last time a series began to grow, toil and boil like it has on Boardwalk Empire and finally delivering us with two more episodes to go, and I’m already, as a viewer, at a fever pitch of needing to know how the hell this god damned season ends.
Boardwalk Empire was one of those shows, like Treme and Bored to Death that wasn’t something that caught on with everyone, but had Martin Scorsese and an amazing budget to back it up more than the latter shows. While it toiled a bit with plots that seemed to not really go anywhere fast, when the first season ended there was not a large concern on how the show would continue. A lot of critics hoped it did better but lost faith in the series. Personally, I am a fan of the slow burn, especially on pay-cable series, and call me a sucker for gangster shows and flicks. Boardwalk Empire tonight delivered in spades, in what has now been a fantastic season thus far.
If anything, I like how Boardwalk Empire is really about the bonds of family, or those we deem family. While the show’s bane of existence is founded by the relationships between those who we consider father and son (Nucky and Jimmy, Nucky and his father, Van Alden’s want to be a father with his wife, The Commodore and Jimmy), but it is also an eerie decent into the ties that bind us, whether it be to a wife, or to our brothers.
While Season 1 you felt for Eli, Nucky’s brother, this season, I am beginning to see how creepy Eli has now become, especially with the brutal murder of one of the members a few episodes back. To see him threaten and take care of one of his own to make him stop talking to the new lawyer in town to crucify Nucky, it’s just fascinating television, with an amazing set of performances all around.
With all the balls up in the air, I don’t want to spoil them too much but the biggest shocker of the night was the big death.
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE EPISODE BEYOND THIS POINT:
More heartbreaking though, tonight, was the brutal and shocking death of Angela, Jimmy’s wife, being laid to pasture like a farm animal after Manny, a crime boss from Philly, came to wreak vengeance on Jimmy. Firing the gun on Louise, Angela’s lover, killing her instantly, Angela begs for mercy, only to be shot in the head, with the phrase “Your husband did this to you.” What made it all the more horrifying is how simple he shot her and without remorse, but then continued to lay bullets in both Angela and Louise.
What is so tragic is that after finally getting what he wanted, Jimmy’s poor common sense, and letting people push him around had led to a poor business deal with Manny Horovitz, who blames Jimmy on an assassination attempt, which though he knew of it, he didn’t sign off on it.
For those who wrote the show off, I can’t say enough that this is a show you need to stick with. The slow burn is paying off, with literally some of the best television being showcased right here on HBO. So use HBO Go and catch up there or OnDemand, because the next two weeks, shit is going to hit the fan. And personally? I can’t wait.
