Cristina’s Fine Mexican Restaurant opened its doors in Forney in November 2011. The restaurant, located at 724 E. Hwy 80. near the FM 548 exit, was much anticipated by local residents who were eager for more food options in town. The company defines their food as a combination of Comida Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food. Customers have given the restaurant mixed reviews so far, and after dining there twice, I understand why opinions differ.
My first experience at Cristina’s was not an unpleasant one, but it had room for improvement. The chips were simply ok, and the salsa was watery and over packed with onions. The service itself was great, though the restaurant was very busy being as it was dinner time, the waiter was very attentive. As I waited for my food I took in the beautiful interior decor and the enjoyable ambiance of Cristina’s. It is nicely decorated and cozy, though when the Texas sun is dropping in the western sky, even the black sun blinds are not able to keep customers in certain seats from being annoyed by the blinding light.
Our table enjoyed the puffed tacos which were nicely seasoned. We chose beef over chicken and the tacos were a hit. The chicken enchiladas were also good, but not incredible. The boiled beans were tasty but the rice seemed a little dry.
On my second recent visit to Cristina’s, my party arrived as the doors opened at 4 pm. The restaurant was not busy and the chips and salsa were much improved. In fact, they were really good. We ordered the house margarita and found that though it was quite good, those who are looking for a high amount of tequila in their margarita may be disappointed. The puffed tacos were ordered again and I decided to try the cheese enchiladas with chili sauce, rice and refried beans. The entire dish was excellent and the puffed tacos were a hit again. The service was good and the only problem arose when we ordered dessert.
The “fried ice cream” on the dessert menu looked amazing, but when it arrived at the table, though it looked great, it was not fried. It seemed to be ice cream rolled in toasted coconut, and as luck would have it, I’m allergic to coconut. The coconut ingredient was not mentioned on the menu description and it could have been a real problem for me had my friend not noticed what was on the ice cream. We changed our order to the fudge brownie with chocolate and caramel with vanilla ice cream. For a chocolate lover like me, this was simply delicious.
The prices for the lunch and dinner menu items are in the $8-$15 range and the desserts are about $5. The adult beverages are also in the $5-$10 price range. It seems the Forney Cristina’s are tweaking things a bit as they receive feedback, and it appears to be for the better. If you go to the restaurant on a weekend evening, expect a little bit of a wait. Cristina’s is the new popular place in town, and mixed reviews or not, people are flocking to it.
