During this holiday season there is nothing like gathering around the flat screen TV with the ones you love and watching some mixed martial arts. Every couch dweller across the city of Toronto knows that the ever growing sport of mixed martial arts is becoming a powerful force in our 200 + channel universe. Out today from our friends at Anchor Bay Entertainment is the DVD of the mixed martial arts event that took place in the lone star state this past October and featured the final bout of one of the most memorable fight series in recent memory. Get ready for “UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III”.
A surprisingly entertaining fight card featured the following contests. Two Middleweight bouts opened the evening as we saw Steve Cantwell vs. Mike Massenzio and Aaron Simpson vs. Eric Schafer. The fight card then moves to the Featherweight division for a bout of Zhang Tie Quan vs. Darren Elkins. Following that is a Heavyweight brawl of Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic followed up by a Lightweight bout of Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens. The preliminary and undercard fights that aired on Facebook and Sportsnet finishes up with a Middleweight bout of Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago.
The main pay-per view fight card consisted of Lightweights Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon, Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan in a Featherweight bout that earned the Fight Of The Night honors, as well as a Middleweight bout of Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann. The co-main event of the evening featured Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian fighting for the UFC Featherweight Championship and the main event of the night was the end of the trilogy between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard as they fought for the Lightweight Championship of the UFC.
As 8 of the 11 fights on the card went to the judge’s scorecard there certainly was enough action in the Octagon to keep the most discerning fight fan entertained as this was a very deep card from top to bottom. The Heavyweight bout of Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic was an absolute brawl that was incredibly entertaining, the fight of the night between Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan got the Texas crowd all riled up along with the post fight antics of Chael Sonnen who always has something entertaining to say. The title fights were both well fought and highly entertaining contests for fight fans who appreciate the grappling and the stand up aspects of the fight game.
The extras on this 2 DVD set include the ‘Countdown to UFC 136’ show as well as the weigh-in show, a behind the scenes look at the event as well as Joe Rogan in a 1 on 1 interview with Anthony Pettis, a UFC Unguarded look at Kenny Florian and various UFC Promos.
Despite the lack of exciting finishes, “UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III” was a highly enjoyable night of fights and is an excellent example of how exciting this sport can be if you sit back to appreciate the skill that these fighters bring to the table.
4 out of 5 stars.
“UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III” probably won’t be available at video stores across Toronto; you can still click here for a list of some of the finer stores near you. With the price point on UFC DVD’s historically being fairly low (under $20) I’d recommend an online retailer like amazon.ca or a brick and mortar one like hmv.ca if you are interested in checking out this night of MMA action.
