‘Rizzoli & Isles’ pulls out big gun guest stars for its winter 2011 return

by lode plus

Rizzoli & Isles’ second season took a short hiatus on TNT for the last few months, but now that it is coming back, it is going all out with complex cases and big name guest stars. In its second season winter premiere, “Can I Get A Witness?”, two such stars join the ladies for a high profile, and high tension case: Roselyn Sanchez and Bill O’Reilly.

Sanchez steps in as a District Attorney assigned to help Jane (Angie Harmon) protect a witness in a gang-related shooting. The kid is in police custody, set to testify against a well-known crime kingpin in the projects of Boston, after having watched the guy mow down a beloved community leader on a public street. But wait, there’s more. The kid watched this all occur in broad daylight, clearly seeing the shooter’s face, and the shooter, therefore, clearly seeing his. So very quickly another homicide investigation takes over Jane’s attention when her witness somehow escapes his protective custody and gets murdered in an equally public park.

We have to admit, we have never enjoyed Sanchez more than as the spunky A.D.A. who challenges Jane to step up her game and seems to bond a bit with Maura (Sasha Alexander), but the true gems of moments come from O’Reilly, who guest stars as himself, first simply on-screen as Jane bemoans her mother (Lorraine Bracco)’s crush on the commentator, and then in person, in town to promote his book, cover the case, and eventually pursue Jane to come on his show.

“Can I Get A Witness?” gets even more complex when everyone assumes Korsak (Bruce McGill) made up a confidential informant simply to close the case against the gang-banger because he refuses to produce the person. Two cases become three when Internal Affairs wants to get involved in his police work.

Oh yes, Rizzoli & Isles is certainly back. And if “Can I Get A Witness?” is any indication, the second half of this second season is going to be chock full of mysterious twists and potential threats from right there within Boston PD. This is one crime drama that is stepping up its procedural game, proving it is still strong, even in the face of a new year and a batch of new shows.

Rizzoli & Isles returns to TNT on Monday, November 28th at 10pm.
