Last week the boxing world was up in arms with the announcement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. being sentenced to 90 days in jail for his involvement in a September 2010 domestic violence case with his former fiancé’ Josie Harris and two of his children.
Mayweather is the type of fighter that draws strong opinions from the masses but on Monday afternoon one individual chose to not focus too much on Floyd’s out-of-the-ring drama. Trainer Robert Garcia, now in Las Vegas working with Nonito Donaire for his February 4th HBO date with Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., gave his take on Mayweather’s impending sentencing.

“I did read about that but I don’t really pay attention to what I read,” Garcia said, speaking from the Top Rank Gym. “Sometimes a lot of things are not the way they really are. But if it is, hey, he’s going to do his time and why even question that? He’s going to be man enough to come in and do his time and hey, good luck to him.”
Mayweather almost certainly looks to be missing out on his proposed May 5th return and a much –coveted collision with fellow superstar Manny Pacquiao has again been pushed back. Pacquiao-Mayweather is the kind of fight that was creating mainstream interest but it has been two solid years since we all have been fantasizing such a matchup and by this point some of the luster has been lost.
Garcia personally feels that the iron is no longer hot and that it’s time for each man to move on in separate directions.
“I think there’s so many other fights that Pacquiao could do and Mayweather could do that, in reality, that we don’t even need to see that fight anymore,” Garcia stated. “The way Pacquiao looked in his last fight and the way Mayweather’s been looking, I truly believe Mayweather would beat Pacquiao.
“At one time I thought Pacquiao would win, but now I think Mayweather would beat Pacquiao. Plus, they could do so much on their own, why make them fight? There’s so much money out there for the whole world, for different promoters.”

Pacquiao is coming off of an extremely-debated majority-decision over Juan Manuel Marquez last month and looks to be in line for a return in either May or June to defend his WBO welterweight strap. With Mayweather out of the equation, the options seems to come down to a fourth fight with Marquez, a clash with undefeated junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, and perhaps a rematch with Boricua banger Miguel Cotto.
Garcia is uncertain of the next move but knows fully well that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has something up his sleeve.
“I have no idea. I know Bob Arum does a great job on picking his opponents and promoting his fights, so whoever it is, I know it will be great fight and a fight that will sell out and people are going to pay to see.”
