Dec. 30, 2011 – After 14 months of marriage, comedian/actor Russell Brand filed for divorce from his wife, pop singer Katy Perry. Perry, who last performed in Oklahoma at the BOK Center on Sept. 17, was not available for comment at this time.
“Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage,” Brand announced in a released statement. “I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”
The divorce comes at a strange moment because Brand appeared on Ellen earlier in the month and shot down divorce rumors, saying they were still happily married.
“I’m married to Katy,” Brand insisted. “Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive.”
The entire rumors of divorce began to circulate when they were spotted without their wedding rings and then spent Christmas apart. Brand spent the holidays with his family in London and Perry was in Hawaii at the time. According to US Weekly, Brand and Perry had a major fight prior to leaving for Christmas and went their separate ways.
One anonymous source in the US Weekly story said that “Katy doesn’t think Russell respects her parents’ Christian beliefs or her friends.” Another source said “The fighting is getting worse.”
The celebrity couple married in October 2010 in India.
