Canton, Ga. – On Wednesday, shortly after his brother was arrested for the murder of Jorelys Rivera, 7, Connor Brunn came to the defense of his sibling Ryan, saying he believes he is “innocent.”
Connor spoke to 11 Alive News with the media outlet noting that he and Ryan are both 20 but “They’re not twins; their parents adopted them as infants.”
Brunn was arrested on Wednesday afternoon and is charged with one count of false statements and one count of murder in connection with Jorelys death. According to local 11 Alive, Brunn’s alibi of being at Walmart at the time Jorelys was abducted and killed does not check out.
Connor told 11 Alive’s Doug Richards, “…my brother I honestly think he is innocent. There’s just no way he would do something like this. He’s just a kindhearted person… This is just some big mistake… I… think this was a big setup in his part.”
Ryan’s brother noted that his sibling had just moved to the area about three or four weeks ago and had just started his job as a maintenance man at the apartment complex where Jorelys lived and where authorities believe she was murdered.
Connor noted he had spoken with Ryan since Jorelys murder and Ryan told him he knew he was a suspect, but would never do such a thing.
On Tuesday authorities announced that Jorelys injuries were so severe that they couldn’t be described. Law enforcement would only say that she was sexually assaulted, beaten in the head and stabbed, calling her death a “very horrific and brutal murder.”
Although Connor acknowledged that as a maintenance man his brother had access to the trash compactor where Jorelys body was found, he said, “…but also you gotta think – there’s other maintenance workers there, and there’s also pedophiles. One lives right about the little girl. For Pete’s sake, like, lives right above the little girl! And they honestly think my brother – a crime free guy that has no criminal background whatsoever. They just think it’s him.”
Connor also said Ryan feared he would be arrested for the crime because “he was being questioned for the last fourteen hours and whatnot and he just doesn’t know… he’s never been arrested before. He’s never went to jail. He’s never been in the back of a cop car. Juts been a good kid… This is something crazy.”
In addition, he said his brother is just one of four or five other maintenance men who also have access to the same things that Ryan has access to.
Connor concluded by saying, “…my brother is innocent. That’s really all I’ve got to say.”

Jorelys was last seen around 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at the River Ridge apartment complex where she lived. She was at the playground with her teenage babysitter and had gone back to her apartment alone to retrieve refreshments for her friends when she vanished, according to authorities.
Ryan Brunn is slated to appear in court on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. regarding the charges against him.
Jorelys mother’s employer, Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation has set up a Jorelys Rivera Memorial Fund to assist the family, Margaret McDonald, a company representative told local media. Anyone wishing to donate to the fund can contact the United Community Bank in Canton at 770-479-6700.
