Coming off their first San Francisco Section volleyball championship in school history a couple of weeks ago and a hard fought win against Enterprise a night before in a play-in game, the eighth seeded Balboa Buccaneers had shown they were a good team and had some confidence entering their Tuesday night first round CIF Division III State Volleyball Playoff game against Central Coast Section champion and top seeded Sacred Heart Cathedral Irish.
Despite the confidence, the Buccaneers knew they had to play their best to just stay with the Irish. Instead, the Buccaneers played tentatively and the Irish took full advantage to win 25-14, 25-9, 25-13 to advance to the CIF Division III State Volleyball Playoff semi-finals.
The Buccaneers were never in the any of the games as the Irish established their dominance early in every game forcing Balboa coach Val Cubales to call timeout in an attempt to rally his team. On the other sideline, Sacred Heart Cathderal coach Margi Beima was encouraging her team to stay focused due to some sloppy play by the Irish which led to several Bucaneer points.
With the loss, the Buccaneers finished their season at 21-11 overall but have nothing to hang their heads about. Coach Cubales was seen giving his team a pep talk after the game. The Irish improved to 31-7 overall. The Irish will take a few days off for Thanksgiving before returning to action on Saturday November 26th at Sacred Heart Catherdal. The Irish will play fifth seeded Sir Francis Drake (NCS Champs, 20-9 overall). Drake pulled off a mild upset as they swept Foothill (NS Champions, 27-17 overall) 25-15, 25-15, 25-14. The game will be at 7 PM.
