Entry blanks are now circulating for a pair of tournaments to be conducted by the Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Bowling Association at Sarasota Lanes in February and early March.
The 63rd annual SMCBA Open Championships, to be held on the weekends of Feb. 25-26 and March 3-4, will be preceded by the 14th annual 700-Plus Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 19.
In addition, the Sarasota-Manatee Men’s Hall of Fame will stage a first annual Bill Wenzel Valentine Handicap Mixed Doubles event on Sunday, Feb. 5, at AMF Bradenton.
Because the SMCBA will be hosting the annual women’s state tournament next year, the association has exercised its option to not conduct a women’s championship tourney in 2012.
Some details about the aforementioned tournaments:
SMCBA Open (Feb. 25-26, March 3-4 at Sarasota Lanes)
The event is open to all bowlers who will have been a certified association member for at least 30 days prior to their scheduled participation.
Entry fee has been set at $20 per person per event, plus optional handicap (90 percent of 220) and scratch all-events at $5 each.
Saturday squad times will be at noon and 4 p.m., while first-weekend Sunday squads will be at 1 and 5 p.m. On the final Sunday (March 4), there will be only one squad, at 1 p.m.
Multiple participation will be allowed only in the five-player team event, but team lineups consisting of more than three individuals entered together will not be accepted.
Entries will close at midnight on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Complete rules and information can be found on the entry blanks. To view or download a copy, click here.
700-Plus Tournament (Feb. 19 at Sarasota Lanes)
The event will consist of a handicap doubles competition at noon, followed by scratch and handicap doubles at 3:30 p.m.
Handicap doubles teams must consist of one SMCBA member who has rolled a certified three-game scratch series of 700 or better within the past four years and a member who has not done so. Handicap will be 90 percent of 220, and entry fee per doubles team will be $40 if paid prior to the tournament date. Walk-in entries will be accepted at $10 extra ($50 per team).
All SMCBA members who have rolled a 700+ series at any time are eligible for scratch singles, and all members who haven’t rolled one in the past four years are eligible for handicap singles. Paid-in-advance entry fee in either singles category is $20, but walk-ins will be required to pay $25.
The top five finishers in scratch singles will be entered into a PBA-style stepladder finals to determine the champion.

Early entries are encouraged because same-day walk-ins will be assessed an additional cost of $5 per bowler.
