So often we see the ridiculously-small slap on the wrist that monsters are given as a sentence for animal abuse, cruelty, rape and even murder. It’s frustrating beyond words for advocates to watch someone who tortured and/or murdered a helpless animal walk away with nothing more than a fine and no jail time.
Advocates are working hard to try to get the laws changed in several countries so that animals are finally recognized as more than just “property”, but instead are seen as the living beings they really are; able to feal love, fear and pain just as humans are.
In the story published yesterday about little Shadow, the Chihuahua who had been raped by a monster in California, it was finally some good news. The judge in that case, Superior Court Judge Tadd Blizzard, handed down the maximum 10-year sentence against Robert Edward De Shields in a case of animal cruelty where it was found he had strangled and raped a tiny 8-pound Chihuahua. De Shields must also register as a sex offender.
It was a huge victory for animals that this judge recognized the heinous nature of the crime and the fact that this monster was a threat to all of society, imposing the maximum sentence allowed by law.
The wonderful organization, Hand4Paws, who try to help animals with petitions and be a voice for them has drawn up a petition thanking the judges across the United States who have been a voice for animals by imposing sentences for animal abusers that actually sent a message to others.
In our legal system, the only deterrent against future crimes is when the would-be abusers see they will indeed be punished severely for harming a helpless animal. When ridiculously-small and meaningless sentences are imposed, those same potential abusers believe they won’t have to really suffer any consequences, resulting in more and more animals being hurt, maimed, tortured or killed.
Please consider adding your signature to this petition, to say “thank you” to the judges and lawmakers who are truly acting as a voice for animals. We definitely need more like them, and hopefully a few words of thanks will cause others to take notice and want to also become a voice for those who have none. If you are aware of any other cases where a judge should be recognized, please contact Hand4Paws at their Facebook page linked below.
Also included here are links to three petitions that had been included in another article, but bear repeating here for those who might not have seen or signed them. One of them asks that a “Dexter stamp” be placed on the identification cards of anyone convicted of being an animal abuser. (The stamp is named for little Dexter, a tiny kitten who was brutally tortured by a mother and her sons and subsequently had to be euthanized from his injuries.)
The second is a petition asking that lawmakers make animal abuse a felony with serious consequences in all states. The third is from the Animal Legal Defense Fund, with a “first strike and you’re out” for all states, that will mean anyone convicted of animal abuse can never again have an animal as part of their lives.
Again, please consider adding your voice to these causes if you haven’t already. (All of them can be signed by anyone from any country, and as many voices as possible are needed for all of them.) You can access the petitions at the links provided below.
The sentence handed down against De Shields and the other cases that are cited in the Hand4Paws “thank you” petition give hope for the positive changes that are desperately needed for the animals of this world.
