Artistic Director Joel Hammer, Associate Artistic Director Dianne Boduszek and Managing Director Charlotta Enflo are proud to announce the second season of GYMworks and the inaugural season of GYMrep, both a part of the Playwrights‘ GYM, in the theatre’s home in Cleveland Heights at 2340 Lee Road.
Committed to producing new works by new and established playwrights, Dobama Theatre offers the Playwrights’ GYM for local playwrights. The GYM provides playwrights with the opportunity to workshop new works and to collaborate with a director. The GYM’s goal is to nurture new work in a safe environment, provide the “exercise” equipment needed to write a play, produce a new group of directors and develop plays to be performed at Dobama.
GYMrep will showcase two new full length productions produced in repertory from the GYM playwrights: TELLING LIVES by Faye Sholiton and THE MIGHTY SCARABS by Cornell Hubert Calhoun III. In TELLING LIVES, an elderly mother asks her grown daughter to edit her newly written autobiography. The daughter responds by attempting to edit her mother’s life. The granddaughter, a playwright, has her own take on the family history that has already found its way to the stage. Over the course of a weekend, the three women discover the truth about memory: it is not only imperfect; it hangs on by a thread.
In THE MIGHTY SCARABS, twenty years have passed since the East Tech High School Basketball Team captured the State Championship, a source of pride for its community and followers. But did that one shining moment ultimately contribute to their demise? Hail to the Mighty Scarabs!
GYMworks will present scenes of new short plays by Larry Nehring, Faye Sholiton, Christopher Johnston, Cornell Hubert Calhoun III, and Deborah Magid.
