In Kabbalah we look for combinations that will illuminate the unity above giving us a context to study under and an inspiration to follow through with. We have been speaking about the Sepher Yetzirah and the mediating influence of the breath. The breath is the permeable membrane through which passes that from above to below and then below to above.

The breath is what animates it all as we see here.
Genesis 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
What moves within man. It is his breath and by extension his thoughts. It is this animation that makes man like the Elokim in their image. Now in order for any movement within to make sense something else had to come into being.
Sepher Yetzirah 3:7 He made the letter Alef king over Breath And He bound a crown to it. And He combined them one with another And with them He formed Air in the Universe The temperate in the Year. And the chest in the Soul: The male with AMSh. And the female with AShM.
The letters had to come to be in order to combine everything into the various ways of expression. Most notably there is Alef the King over Breath. The Breath cannot sustain anything unless it becomes self knowing. That is the reason for the Crown of Kingship means that the Breath now has a purpose a reason to be and a destination to travel to unceasingly. It is in the making of these destinations that the animation of thought makes use of the various letters.
Now it is also necessary to bring about the context into which everything gains its relationship. That context is called in the Universe Air, in the Year the temperate and the chest in the Soul. Therefore in the Universe it is the Air that sustains life. Now this Air is not simply the kind we breath in and out each day but it has an all encompassing quality to it of Space for it is in Space that all of our contextual relationships take place.
What does it mean temperate in the Year? The context here is of time in its most passive form which is simply moving on from one moment to the next.
We spoke of the chest in the Soul previously but to recap within the chest the Breath is raised or lowered according to the capacity of thought to recognize its fullness. This is where transformations take place not only within the Soul but within the entire nexus of Creation.
Consider these three (Air, Temperate, chest) to be artist’s brushes that he uses to work upon the canvass of Creation.
In order then for Creation to produce itself again and again it has to become self reflective. It must know what is going on at all times. The qualities of Male and Female then provide the means for this to take place.
Male signified by AMSh (Aleph Mem Shin) is the passing of the breath through water to become fire, while the female is the passing in the opposite direction (Aleph Shin Mem) with breath flowing from fire to water. It might be easier to understand this if we place breath or Aleph in the middle of MSH A SHM.
With the male the Breath flows into water becoming one there producing the reaction of fire or inspiration. The female aspect takes that inspiration reigniting the Breath so that it remembers or reflects itself producing the water as in the water that will reflect an image of whatever is facing towards it.
These examples speak to how our own Consciousness works in its interpretations of meanings throughout the day. Inspiration (fire) into water (unity of concept) then the concept is reflected inspiration (water remains) and then inspiration is reignited all of this taking place within the breath in between those thoughts that we are thinking in each moment.
